This past weekend on Aug 16-18th/2019 CASARA NWT hosted the 2019 Western SAREX Training Event! The event was held in Yellowknife and included attendants from CASARA, 440 Transport Squadron, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary (CCGA), Canadian Rangers and the CASARA Liaison Officer of the 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron. The event involved CASARA members all the way from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, BC, and the NWT. In total, we had 64 CASARA members attending the event along with 2 local and 6 non-local CASARA aircraft. The event in total had 7 aircraft to support the operations.
To provide realistic simulated event scenarios targets were arranged in designated areas.
Area A involved a search and rescue practice with two orange tarps as a ground target, which were previously set up by CASARA members. In area B, the CCGA set out a vessel as a search target and set up a form of communication with them via the marine channel 16. In area C, two unrelated canoe groups were set up as targets. Area D involved the Canadian Rangers, in which orange tarps and signal mirrors were used to signal spotters. Namushka Lodge provided an ELT, tarp and vessel targets in Area H. In areas E, H, & G, Electronic Locater Transmitters on our practice frequency were used. The different areas allowed multiple search and rescue variations, this way the training event covered different types of situations for operations practice.
Thanks to all the CASARA members that were involved this weekend! Being with everyone and meeting new people creates great connection in our search and rescue community!
The operations were all successful and the event was a complete success! Thanks to everyone that attended in making this 2019 Western SAREX Training Event possible, and CASARA looks forward to the next SAREX event.
That others may live!
