Strengthening the North
Recently on Aug 28th, 2022, the Royal Canadian Air Force’s (RCAF’s) 440 Squadron trained 4 CASARA Members (John, Simon, Gavin, and Paul) from Gjoa Haven, Nunavut with the CC-138 Twin Otter (image: below on right). Gjoa Haven is in the far north of Nunavut, located above the Arctic Circle on the King William Island.
It is approximately 1,056 km northeast of Yellowknife, NWT as reference and is in the Kitikmeot region (image: below).
Training in Nunavut doesn’t stop there either. In Rankin Inlet, we also have a set of newly certified spotters! (image: minus the pilot in green vest).
Unfortunately, the stop in Cambridge Bay for training wasn’t complete because of a fuel restriction, but there was a chance to meet Derek and his wife Linda! Another date will be reinstated for the continuation of training. (image below: Rémi, Derek, Linda, and Louis)
Another example of how we are continuing to strengthen our search and rescue capabilities in core areas of the North. Canada has over 9 million sq km of area, with challenging coverage in our northern areas. Therefore, we need all the help we can get! Congratulations to everyone involved and thank you to everyone who helped make the training in CASARA Nunavut successful!
